Lagoon Green Project
~Let's grow eelgrass! Let's create a sea forest together~
This is a fisheries learning experience event that takes place at HOBIE, a water activity using the lagoon, and the adjacent fisheries learning center, "Sakana no Gakko"!

*What is eelgrass?
・It is a type of "seaweed" and is a marine seed plant that blooms and produces seeds in the same way as terrestrial flowers. Wakame and kelp, which are also marine plants, are also called "seaweed" and reproduce by producing spores, so as you can see from the different kanji, they are different types of plants.
- Eelgrass germinates around December to January when the water temperature drops, and small white flowers bloom around May to June, producing seeds. It dies around August (when the limit water temperature is 28°C).
・The presence of eelgrass beds provides a habitat for a variety of creatures. They can also serve as spawning grounds and hiding places for small creatures such as young fish, so they are also called the "cradle of the sea."
・Zostera absorbs nutrients through its roots, called "rhizomes," and performs photosynthesis in its leaves. Through photosynthesis, it absorbs and fixes carbon dioxide (blue carbon) and produces oxygen.
-Dugongs are mammals that eat eelgrass.
