Respiratory infections such as COVID-19and influenza are caused by pathogens, such as viruses, entering the body through the mucous membranes of the nose and throat.
While injectable vaccinescan reduce the risk of severe illness, it is becoming clear that they cannot suppress the infection itself, and the need for developing "mucosal vaccines" that can protect against infection at the mucous membrane level is being re-emphasized.
While research is progressing and some practical applications have begun, numerous challenges remain to be overcome for further research.
What exactly are the challenges, and how are researchers tackling them?
And how do mucosal vaccines suppress infection?
In JulyandAugust, our community learning sessions will feature the latest information on mucosal vaccine research!
