[Autumn Art] I went to the much talked about immersive exhibition "Klimt Alive"

2025/09/05
  • "Klimt Alive" is the world's first immersive exhibition that uses cutting-edge video technology to allow visitors to experience the dazzling world of Gustav Klimt, the genius painter who continued to paint beauty and sensuality in Vienna at the end of the 19th century. It will bring fresh surprises and excitement to art fans as well as those experiencing Klimt for the first time.

This time, we will visit the exhibition, which is being held at Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall until Sunday, October 5th, and report on all of its charms!

*This article contains an introduction to the exhibit. Please be aware of this if you have not yet seen the exhibit.

  • There's plenty to see even before you see the film!

Entering the entrance to Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall on the 1st and 4F floors of COREDO Muromachi and taking the escalator up to the 5th floor, the first thing that catches your eye is the key visual for "Klimt Alive."

You will be greeted by a huge panel that symbolizes the world of Klimt that you are about to enter! Many people enjoy taking commemorative photos here first.

From there, along the corridor, there are panels displaying Klimt's biography, his words, and explanations of each of his 14 representative works.

    fig

It is full of little-known anecdotes that will interest anyone, even those who are not Klimt fans, such as the thoughts and painting techniques that went into the works and the reactions of people at the time.

By reading along, you'll be able to enjoy Klimt's world even more deeply!

    fig

As you follow the route, you will come across information panels along the way that say "AR with Klimt"!

Klimt-san is an original character for this exhibition, based on Klimt, who was known to be a big cat lover. When you scan the QR code on the information panel and tap the URL, Klimt-san holding a cat will appear on your smartphone.

    fig

Klimt playing with the cat is so playful and cute! You can also save the photo by pressing the shutter button.

*This service may not be available depending on the device you are using.

    fig

Going further inside, you will also find a QR code that will allow you to Access a special message from Kento Senga (Kis-My-Ft2), the official ambassador for the Klimt Alive Tokyo exhibition!

This is a special gift for attendees only, and can only be played at the venue. Don't miss this special message from Senga, who is active not only as an idol but also as an artist!

  • Be surrounded by art in a huge space 7 meters high!

After walking down the corridor while looking back at Klimt's history and works, you finally reach the main hall. Once you open the curtains and enter the hall, you'll be enveloped in light, sound, and fragrance.

    fig

The combination of high-definition multi-screen video and cinema-quality surround sound creates a truly immersive experience. Adding scents to the mix creates an even deeper sense of immersion.

The sensual and intimate scent of violet, iris and red cedarwood is mixed with the warm scent of cardamom and carrot seed. By stimulating the sense of smell, which is said to be linked to memory and emotions, in addition to sight and hearing, the scent makes your journey into Klimt's world even more memorable.

    fig

In a large space 7m high, Klimt's works are projected one after another onto screens of various sizes and shapes that are combined in a three-dimensional manner, and you can view them from any angle in 360 degrees!

The images are projected onto the floor, creating a new viewing experience that makes you feel as if you have been transported into the work itself.

    fig

The works projected are a diverse range of masterpieces from Klimt's early to later years, including "The Kiss," "Judith," and "Death and Life." As you immerse yourself in the classical music that accompanies the images, you can enjoy an experience that will captivate you with Klimt's gorgeous decorativeness and sensual beauty.

    fig

You are welcome to take photos and videos and post them on social media! Capture the excitement of your experience in this fantastical space as a lasting memory.

In addition, next to the main venue, there is a small room of "The Tree of Life" and a photo spot of "The Kiss," both based on Klimt's masterpiece.

At the photo spot beyond the small room filled with swirling golden branches, you can sit on a flower bench and take photos.
