Modern Chinese 181 is a traditional local Chinese restaurant that you will never tire of, even if you eat it every day, and Gyutan Mihashi is a restaurant where you can enjoy freshly cooked rice with their famous beef tongue. Located next to each other, we will report on these new and popular restaurants that are both bustling from lunch time! -
Modern Chinese 181: Enjoy four types of mapo tofu
The first restaurant we visited was Modern Chinese 181. The open atmosphere of the restaurant, coupled with its location in Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower B1, Connected to Mitsukoshimae Station on subway, makes it a very casual and welcoming place to drop in.
From comfortable counter seats for one person to table seats for groups, it is perfect for a wide range of occasions. The table seats can seat up to 16 people, and can accommodate up to 40 people if you rent the entire place.
"Modern Chinese 181" serves authentic, delicious dishes based on local Chinese cuisine that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and genders, and is prepared by a chef with over 30 years of experience in the Chinese cuisine industry!
If we were to pick a must-try dish, we couldn't leave out mapo tofu. They have a lineup of 4 different flavors: Sichuan mapo tofu, Japanese style mapo tofu, white mapo tofu, and non-spicy mapo tofu!
Another attractive feature is the reasonable price of less than 1,000 yen for lunch. All lunch set meals come with rice, Chinese soup with wakame seaweed and beaten egg, and refreshing green pickled mustard greens.[Lunch] Sichuan mapo tofu set meal: 980 yen (tax included) *For the lunch set meal, you can choose between Sichuan mapo tofu and non-spicy mapo tofu.
The Sichuan Mapo Tofu is an authentic dish that will satisfy even the most discerning Chinese food connoisseurs. It is spicy enough to make you sweat as you eat it, but it also has a deep, delicious flavor that will make you addicted.
Of course, it goes great with rice too! With the lunch set meal, you can have one free refill of rice.
*The free refill of rice is a limited-time opening campaign (end date undecided).Dandan noodles are also a popular menu item, rivaling mapo tofu.
The soup is made with plenty of sesame seeds, and has a rich sesame flavor. Garlic chips, bean sprouts, bok choy, and sweetly seasoned minced meat are served in the soup. Enjoy the delicious combination of these ingredients along with the straight, thin noodles that are well mixed with the soup![Lunch] Dandan noodles 980 yen (tax included) [Dinner] Dandan noodles 1,188 yen (tax included)
All other dishes are also made with great attention to the ingredients, seasonings, and cooking methods.
For example, the chicken and sauce for the Yodare Tori are prepared in-house. The chicken is cooked at a low temperature with salt, Japanese pepper, and green onions, so that the chicken is well seasoned inside and has a moist, chewy texture without being dry. The homemade sauce has a strong garlic flavor that goes well with alcohol.Chicken with soy sauce 858 yen (tax included) Tsingtao beer 715 yen (tax included)
We also have a wide selection of alcoholic drinks that go well with Chinese food, such as Tsingtao beer and Shaoxing wine!
Not only is it a great place to have a quick drink after work, but it also offers course meals and all-you-can-drink, making it the perfect place for large parties. -
"Gyutan Mihashi" focuses on the deliciousness of beef tongue and rice
The next place we visited was Gyutan Mihashi, located next to Modern Chinese 181.
The interior of the shop has a cozy and casual atmosphere, and since it is directly connected to the station and has counter seats, it is a great place to come alone. It is also a great place to have a quick drink and go home in the evening.Like "Modern Chinese 181," there is seating for groups of up to 16 people, and if you book the entire place, it can accommodate up to 40 people. They also offer course meals and all-you-can-drink options, making this a restaurant that can be used for a wide range of occasions.
The signature product at Gyutan Mihashi is Sendai-style beef tongue. Selected high-quality beef tongue is cut thickly, seasoned, and carefully grilled one by one after an order is placed. The beef tongue is served after being cooked to the perfect temperature.
You can choose from three types of beef tongue: regular, large, and special. Not only the amount but also the quality of the meat differs, with the special using fatty and tender tongue. All beef tongue has a pleasantly crispy texture, yet is soft enough to be easily chewed. The more you chew, the more juicy and delicious the flavor becomes.
The beef tongue is served with nanban miso, lightly pickled cabbage, and chopped wasabi, following the Sendai style. If you like spicy food, try it with nanban miso and chopped wasabi. The perfect combination of these two accents will have you eating even more!
We also offer set meals for lunch, which come with rice, seasoned grated yam, and miso soup, making it a better deal than usual.[Lunch] Beef tongue set meal (large) 2,400 yen (tax included)
Another major feature of Gyutan Mihashi is the deliciousness of the rice. Instead of using a typical electric rice cooker, the rice is cooked using a gas cooker at high heat, bringing out the sweetness of the rice and making it shiny and chewy.
When you think of grated yam rice, you probably think of barley rice, but grated yam with a strong dashi flavor goes well with freshly cooked rice. You can have one refill for free!
*The free refill of rice is a limited-time opening campaign (end date undecided). In addition to beef tongue, we also offer a wide variety of side dishes that go well with rice. For lunch, you can also choose a set meal that includes rice and side dishes.
[Lunch] Beef tongue and rice set meal 2,200 yen (tax included)
The set meal for this day included "Nori Tsukudani," "Takana Mentaiko," and "Nametake." The rice accompaniments were carefully selected items purchased from a fish shop in Toyosu, and all of them are excellent supporting actors that further enhance the deliciousness of the rice. Served in carefully selected dishes, the appearance of the dish also stimulates the appetite!
It's also great to have a drink in the evening while snacking on beef tongue and rice. The lineup is modeled after a popular bar, and offers a wide variety of drinks that go well with beef tongue, such as beer, Hoppy, and highballs.
[Dinner] Large beef tongue 2,640 yen (tax included), draft beer Ichiban Shibori 660 yen (tax included), land highball 605 yen (tax included)
In addition to the beef tongue and rice accompaniments, there are also many snacks on the menu, including salads, fried foods, final meals, and sweets, all of which are familiar izakaya menu items. However, the "Mihashi style" has a slight twist to it.
For example, the Chinese cabbage salad is made with Nanban miso mayonnaise, and the French fries are served with salted squid, highlighting the restaurant's ingenuity in its pursuit of a higher level of deliciousness. In addition to the restaurant's proud beef tongue, please also enjoy the carefully selected snacks!
