What is Narai-juku?
Of the 11 post towns in Kiso, it was the highest in elevation and, situated before the treacherous Torii Pass, flourished as a post town with many travelers, earning it the nickname "Narai of a Thousand Houses." The townscape has been designated a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and it retains much of its former appearance.
[Kiso Narai-juku Kimura] is located in one of these post towns.
We acquired a 300-year-old traditional Japanese house and set up a shop there. Look for the familiar Kimura noren (traditional Japanese curtain).
The aroma of soy sauce wafting over the grilled goheimochi and dango attracts passersby, who stop in their tracks and make a purchase.
On holidays, the lines get incredibly long.
