The finest Japanese culture in an extraordinary space

The finest Japanese culture in an extraordinary space

Suigian is the only venue where various schools of Japan’s traditional performing arts, such as Noh, Kyogen, and Nihonbuyo, are presented on a daily basis. It is also a place where even longtime residents of Japan can enjoy luxury unlike anything they have ever experienced.

The bowls and plates used to serve the cuisine are vintage items from the Edo (1603–1867), Meiji (1868–1912), and Taisho (1912–26) Periods, while the wine list comprises carefully selected, Japan-produced varieties. These are complemented by a selection of sake and whiskey.

On stage, the performers have their own microphones and provide explanations so that audience members can enjoy the show even without prior knowledge of Japan’s traditional performing arts. Although it is an extraordinary space filled with fastidious attention to detail, this salon manages to be a live venue for modern classical performing arts that is open and accessible to the general public.

Inheriting the spirit of Momokawa

Inheriting the spirit of Momokawa

Suigian was born as a cultural salon in a location with an illustrious history. The area was once home to Momokawa, a legendary traditional restaurant well regarded by those in the know. Momokawa served as a gathering place for the intellectuals who helped develop Edo culture, and Suigian takes you back to that time. Thanks to its unique charm, you will not only enjoy traditional performing arts, delicious meals and sake, but also feel as though you have become part of the stage and history. Various seating options provide many ways to enjoy the traditional arts, whether close to the stage to appreciate the detail in the performer’s actions and attire or farther back where you can relax and savor the atmosphere from sofa-style seats.
