| Brand Concept | "PEKIN HONTEN" is a well-known local Chinese restaurant that has been loved in Anjo City for many years. Following the sudden death of the previous owner, the current owner, Mitsutoshi Sugiura, who was 19 years old at the time, took over the business relying on the notebooks and recipes left behind at the restaurant. When he first took over, regular customers would say, "It didn't taste like this," but over the course of two years, he recreated the previous owner's flavor. The signature dish, "Peking rice," has been recaptured with the help of regulars, and is still loved by many today. The balance of the pork coated in a sweet and spicy sauce and the soft-boiled egg is exquisite, and it is loved by many as an "addictive taste" that makes you unable to stop eating rice. Sugiura says, "Even if I make 100 cups, it's only one cup for the customer. I want to make that one cup with care." He approaches each cup with sincerity and continues to strive to improve the taste every day. That desire resonated with Oya of Shinsan Shoji, a local Anjo company that was exploring new business ventures. In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the two met while providing dinner for dormitory residents of a client company, and they hit it off, sharing their desire to "revitalize the local area through food." The exchange that began from there gradually developed into a dream to "spread the flavors of PEKIN HONTEN more widely." Without compromising on the preservation of the flavor, chefs from Shinsan Shoji and Oya himself spent over six months visiting PEKIN HONTEN, thoroughly training in everything from preparation to cooking. Rather than simply supervising the process, they have established a system to convey the "authentic flavor." Now, with its first store opening in the food court at MITSUI OUTLET PARK Okazaki, Peking Rice is taking on the challenge of conveying the charm of the region as the only local Mikawa dish. A new project has begun with many colleagues at the Okazaki Outlet Store. This encounter, born out of the adversity of COVID-19, is bringing a breath of fresh air to our hometown of Anjo and paving the way for the future. |
