The spirit horses (shōryōma) that are placed on the altar during the Obon festival along with other offerings are displayed as vehicles for the ancestors to travel to and from their homes.
Cucumbers are likened to fast horses, while eggplants are likened to slow-walking cows.
It is also a very welcome gift of condolence during the Obon season.
It's also recommended to display them in your room as part of your Buddhist altar, to enjoy the atmosphere of the Obon festival.
