Tasteful K Chair "Suntory Barrel Story"

The K Chair is a representative example of Karimoku 60 and has been produced since 1962.

Among them, we would like to introduce you to the particularly tasteful "Suntory Barrel Story," a collaboration model with Suntory.


"Taru Monogatari" is a sustainability initiative in which Suntory reconstructs barrels that have been used for aging whiskey for approximately 50 to 70 years into furniture and accessories.
This project, which began in 1998, was born from Suntory's desire to "allow people to enjoy whiskey in a more flavorful way."


The barrels are made of white oak, known as the "King of the Forest."
To prevent the raw liquor from leaking, we use precious straight grain boards which have the least amount of warping. Even after their useful life has been completed, the inside of the wood remains incredibly solid and does not lose its value as oak.


It is not uncommon for the barrel wood to still show stains from whiskey that developed during the long aging period, as well as nail marks from when the iron bands were used to secure the outside of the barrel.
We have devised ways to incorporate the unique and tasteful characteristics of barrel wood into the furniture.


The fabric is 100% polyester in ceramic black.
The durable plain weave is tightly woven and brushed to give the fabric a soft, wool-like feel, despite being made of polyester.


Another feature of this upholstery is that by kneading the color into the raw materials before they are made into yarn, there is no need for a yarn dyeing process, which reduces water usage, energy consumption, and CO2 emissions.
The upholstery is environmentally friendly and does not fade easily.
