[New Products] Marukyu Shoten Dabo Shirt & Farmers' Monpe

New items have been released in collaboration with Marukyu Shoten, a wholesaler of dyed products that handles yukata and tenugui in Nihonbashi, Tokyo: a dabo shirt and Farmers' Monpe.

What is a loose-fitting shirt?
This garment, literally named for its loose, baggy fit, is a traditional yukata-style outfit that has been a beloved part of festivals for generations. It has no cinched waist and no collar, making it comfortable and relaxed to wear even in the hot and humid summer. The garments were sewn in Gyoda City, Saitama Prefecture. Gyoda is home to many sewing workshops specializing in festival-related items, including tabi socks. Marukyu Shoten has reimagined this "dabo shirt" as modern everyday wear and has created a new pattern. This pattern is designed to fit Chita cotton, a narrow-width fabric similar to Kurume kasuri, making maximum use of the approximately 36cm fabric width.

 
About the Chusen dyeing method
This traditional Japanese dyeing technique originated in Osaka during the Meiji era and later developed in Tokyo. It is called "chusen" because it involves layering fabric, creating patterns with a resist paste, and then pouring dye over the layers. A characteristic feature is that both the front and back are dyed beautifully in the same way. The dye penetrates the fabric, creating a soft texture, natural bleeding of colors, and a unique handcrafted feel. It is mainly used for clothing such as tenugui (hand towels), yukata (summer kimonos), noren (curtains), and monpe (work pants).


We now have Farmers' Monpe pants with the same pattern as the Edo Chusen-dyed Dabo shirts, and Dabo shirts made not only with Edo Chusen dyeing but also with Kurume Kasuri weaving!
