LACOSTE was founded by French tennis player Rene LACOSTE. In 1927, Rene had a cotton polo shirt made for himself, which was comfortable, breathable, and moisture-wicking, so that he could withstand the heat on the American tennis courts. The polo shirt immediately caused a sensation among the tennis players of the time, who played in long-sleeved town shirts, and revolutionized Men's sportswear.
Taking this opportunity, in 1933, René LACOSTE started production of polo shirts with a crocodile logo together with Andre Gillier, the owner of France's largest knitwear manufacturing company. This was the birth of the LACOSTE polo shirt and the beginning of the brand's history. Although the polo shirt originated as tennis wear, LACOSTE now offers a wide range of collections as a "LIFE" brand of elegance and relaxation.
