Matsushima is the collective name for the more than 260 islands floating in and around Matsushima Bay, and the scenery created by nature is truly spectacular.
Additionally, Zuiganji Temple, which was rebuilt by Date Masamune, is full of things to see, such as the gorgeous Momoyama culture decorations of the main hall, which has been designated a national treasure.
There are also various museums nearby, as well as markets and restaurants where you can sample Matsushima specialties, so there are plenty of things to see and eat.

Shobuda Beach, one of the largest swimming beaches in Miyagi Prefecture, and Shodohama, a surfing spot, are popular tourist spots and the area is also known as one of Japan's three major summer resorts for foreigners.
Furthermore, there is the Okiori Shell Mound, the largest Jomon period ruins in the Tohoku region, and many Jomon pottery pieces are on display at the Shichigahama Town History Museum.

Varies by seasonSendai Uminomori Aquarium is one of the largest aquariums in the Tohoku region, exhibiting approximately 50,000 creatures from 300 different species.
