UNITED ARROWS' unique approach to sustainability

In this article, we will introduce the SDGs Action of UNITED ARROWS UNITED ARROWS LTD. OUTLET, a tenant of MITSUI OUTLET PARK SAPPORO KITAHIROSHIMA. We asked the manager of UNITED ARROWS UNITED ARROWS what their "sustainability initiatives are"?

Establishment of Sustainability Promotion Department

UNITED ARROWS established the Sustainability Promotion Department in April 2020. Until now, CSR promotion had been handled within the Corporate Planning Department, but this new department was launched in order to tackle sustainability as a management issue from a broader perspective. The department aims to take a "United Arrows-like" approach to sustainability, in which customers can actively participate together with the stores, through such measures as product promotion in collaboration with the planning team and disclosure of ESG (environmental, social, and governance) information in conjunction with the UNITED ARROWS PR department.

The apparel industry and SDGs

In the apparel industry, where mass production and mass consumption are the norm, excess inventory is a problem, with over 1 billion pieces of clothing being discarded in a year in Japan alone. With hopes of achieving the goal in the future, UNITED ARROWS Outlet Store is taking on an initiative unique to outlet stores.

Just to the right of the entrance, there is a rack filled with B-grade products. It states, "*Some items are defective, but still wearable," and is working to reduce clothing waste as much as possible. Since the last products arrive at the outlet store, various sales tactics were used to encourage as many people as possible to pick up the products.

Donations to forest conservation organizations

If customers refrain from using shopping bags when shopping, 10 yen will be donated to a forest conservation organization and points will be awarded to customers. Since last year, the material of the shopping bags has been changed to FSC®️ certified paper. We have also been proactively taking part in customer-participation initiatives that make customers, society, and everyone working in the store happy.
